We are now in the middle of summer and the festival season is in full swing as the world’s top bands travel all around the world to entertain hundreds of thousands of music lovers. This time of the year is the busiest for bands as they travel from festival to festival, potentially playing five gigs in seven days. Despite the amount of gigs, this is also the favourite time of the year for the bands. One of the biggest festivals in France recently took place over the weekend starting 2nd July. Les Eurockeennes, play on words involving the words rock and européennes (Europeans), in association with BENCH takes place at the picturesque site of Malsaucy, near Belfort. This is a nature reserve that opens its gates to thousands of festival goers each July, situated along the shore line of Lake Malsaucy. One of the stages is actually positioned on the beach. In its’ first year in 1989, Les Eurockeenees attracted just over 10 000 people. This has risen dramatically to 100 000 in 2009 making the festival one of the largest in the world. Such an eclectic mix of talent made sure that this year’s festival was one of the finest in years. Les Eurockeennes has unrivalled picturesque scenery and a range of music that other festivals struggle to acquire.
The music Gods were smiling upon les Eurockeennes as the whole weekend was swathed in beautiful French sunshine. This was an added bonus to the tens of thousands of people camping over the weekend. You do not necessarily need to love the music in order to enjoy the festival. These festivals are so much more. The camping is itself an experience and a highlight for many.
